San Gimignano dates back to 929 and it is a walled hilltop town. The towers and the spires can be seen from a long distance in all directions. Monasteries and hospices developed over the years for pilgrims and other travellers.
The main sights are :
Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta
The Romanesque Chiesa di San Augustino
The Piazza del Duomo with its seven towers
Various palazzo and piazza dating from the 13 - 14th centuries
and the 13th century Porte San Giovani where the VF route took us from the town.
